Road to Empress Ⅱ: Ultimate Deep Dive Strategy Guide & Walkthrough
Overview
Road to Empress Ⅱ is a live-action FMV (Full Motion Video) interactive palace drama developed by New One Studio, released June 8, 2026 on Steam. It delivers roughly 1,000 minutes of 4K cinematic footage with professional actors in period costumes. This isn't a typical visual novel with static sprites. Every scene is filmed on elaborate physical sets with cinematic lighting, and every choice triggers real consequences through the game's branching narrative engine. The cast includes Kuan Hung, Evie Huang, Zeawo, and Hana Lin.
The game casts you as Wu Yuanzhao, a woman who has taken the veil at Ganye Temple following the events of the first game. Empress Wang recalls you to the palace, restarting a deadly struggle for the throne across 24 main chapters (numbered 17 through 41, continuing from part 1) plus a 7-chapter Side Story. Your decisions shape 57 Steam achievements, 100+ distinct endings, and a personalized Imperial Personality Trait Sketch at the conclusion of each playthrough. The Chinese title is 女王的游戏:盛世天下 女帝篇, and the game builds directly on the events of Road to Empress I (媚娘篇).
Target audience: Fans of interactive dramas, FMV games, Chinese palace intrigue, choice-driven narratives. Moderate English reading level required; the script is dense with political dialogue. The game is not mechanically difficult but rewards careful planning and save management.
Difficulty: Narrative complexity is high. Dozens of branching paths, hidden character traits, and faction reputation tracking make route planning essential. Mechanical difficulty is low: point-and-click plus quick-time events that loop until you pass.
Price: $8.99 USD on Steam (S$23.00 in Singapore). Roughly 7,800 Steam recommendations at the time of writing, with recent reviews running about 76% positive.
What's new versus Road to Empress I: The sequel shifts from inner-court survival to ruling an empire, reviewing memorials, issuing imperial edicts, and navigating faction politics beyond the harem walls. It introduces the Memorial Review and Imperial Edict systems, a Story Map with node-level backtracking, a deeper five-trait system with hidden thresholds, Court Mode after the main story, and the Envoy Audience post-game feature.

Getting Started: First 30 Minutes
Pre-Game Setup
- Claim your 5,000 free Coins. On the main menu, open the mailbox icon. Spend these on Time Rewinds, the in-game currency used to undo bad decisions or revive from Bad Endings. Never spend Coins on cosmetics during a first run.
- Set the Story Map as your default tool. The Story Map (bottom toolbar) shows every unlocked scene node, letting you backtrack to previous choices without restarting. The "Current" button highlights your active path, essential for tracking route progress.
- Enable Hint Mode. Toggle it at the bottom of the Storyline panel. It highlights which dialogue options affect character traits without spoiling outcomes. This also earns the Master Detective achievement.
- Create 3 save slots before Chapter 17. Keep Slot A for your primary playthrough, Slot B at the start of each chapter, and Slot C at major decision points. Some branches lock permanently after 2-3 scenes.
- Claim progression rewards. From the main screen, tap All Chapters (bottom-left) then Claim All (bottom-right) to collect Gold Coins from feats. You can also claim from the Feats section. This unlocks the Perfect for the Lazy achievement.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why It Hurts |
|---|---|
| Playing neutral / balancing all factions | You won't qualify for any high-tier ending. Committing to one path is required. |
| Ignoring the Memorial mechanic | Skipping memorial reviews loses you Prestige and hidden faction standing. |
| Spending Coins on cosmetics first run | Time Rewinds are the only way to escape Bad Endings without replaying a chapter. |
| Saving only one file | If you lock into a low-tier ending 10 chapters in, there's no rollback without multiple saves. |
| Rushing through dialogue | The game flags certain lines as "trait checks"; quick-reading past them misses cues about what the game expects. |
| Failing QTEs repeatedly | QTEs loop until you pass, but each fail costs trait points. Passing on the first try matters. |
| Ignoring the Prologue's pivotal choice | "Leave this place for another life" sends you into the Side Story; "Return to the palace" starts the main route. This single choice determines which campaign you play. |
| Choosing the wrong item to leave behind | In Side Chapter 17, leaving the Soaring Red Kite Hairpin at the well locks you out of the Li Tai relationship path. |
First-Run Route Recommendation
Play the main story (Empress Path, 女帝线) on your first run. It's the most forgiving route: the trait requirements are broad, the critical choices are clearly telegraphed, and it delivers the most satisfying narrative arc. The Prologue choice "Return to the palace and claw to the top" puts you on it. Save the Li Zhi romance path and the Li Tai "Another Life" side story for subsequent playthroughs. After your first main-story completion, the game unlocks Court Mode and the Envoy Audience feature, both of which feed into additional achievements.
Core Mechanics: Under the Hood
The Five Character Traits
The game tracks five hidden numerical traits (0-100 each). Your ending and the Imperial Personality Trait Sketch you receive depend on which traits cross certain thresholds:
| Trait | What It Measures | How to Raise | How to Lower |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambition | Drive for power | Choose bold, power-seeking options | Choose retreat, compromise, submission |
| Fortitude | Resilience under pressure | Survive crises without emotional breaking | Show weakness, beg for mercy |
| Strategy | Tactical thinking | Make calculated long-term choices | Act impulsively, trust others blindly |
| Decisiveness | Ability to act swiftly | Make firm choices without hesitation | Hesitate, defer to others, ask for opinions |
| Prestige | Reputation and influence | Build alliances, issue popular edicts, solve memorials well | Cause public scandals, fail public duties |
The Threshold System:
- Trait ≥ 70: You qualify for endings requiring that trait (e.g., "Cold-Hearted Ruler" needs Ambition ≥ 70 and Decisiveness ≥ 60)
- Trait 40-69: Mid-range, you qualify for neutral endings
- Trait ≤ 39: Low, you're locked out of endings requiring that trait
No trait can be maxed in a single run. A focused build hits 2-3 traits at 70+ and keeps the others at 40-60. Hybrid builds that try to raise all five end up average at everything and locked out of all special endings. Note that certain dialogue choices boost all five traits at once; those are almost always the "correct" progression choices and should be prioritized when you see them.
The Pivot Choice System
When the prompt "Pivot Choice" appears, your selection shapes key plot developments one to three chapters later. The game signals this with "Your past choices ripple forward" at the affected scene. Bookmark these moments; if you hit a Bad Ending later, you'll need to come back and change the pivot. The most impactful pivots:
- Prologue: Main story vs. Side Story split.
- Chapter 17 "What Matters Most": Power / Li Zhi's Love / I want it all. This choice auto-splits scenes all the way through Chapters 18, 25, and 26.
- Chapter 31 "The Promotion" and "How to Deal With Your Brothers": Feed directly into Chapter 32 and Chapter 35 deadlocks.
- Side Chapter 17: What you leave behind, what you pawn, and whether you save Yue's daughter decide whether the Li Tai route is even reachable.
Faction Reputation (Hidden)
Beyond the five visible traits, the game tracks your standing with three major factions:
- Imperial Clan (皇室派): The Emperor's blood relatives. Gain favor by supporting traditional hierarchy.
- Reformist Faction (改革派): Scholar-officials pushing for change. Gain favor by supporting progressive edicts.
- Eunuch/Empress Dowager Faction (内廷派): Inner palace power brokers. Gain favor by playing palace politics.
Faction standing affects which characters offer you alliances, which sidequests unlock, and whether characters betray you in Act 3. Faction standing does not appear in the UI; track it mentally based on who praises or criticizes you.
The Memorial System
Starting from mid-game, you periodically receive memorials (petitions from officials and citizens). Each presents a dilemma:
- Your verdict affects Prestige and faction standing. A well-reasoned judgment raises Prestige. A biased one may please one faction but anger another.
- You can Approve, Reject, or Defer. Deferring costs a small Prestige penalty but buys time if you're unsure.
- Some memorials are traps, officials testing your judgment. Wrong answers can lock you out of certain endings.
Pro-tip: Read the full memorial text, not just the TL;DR summary. The game hides clues in the body text about which faction the petitioner belongs to. Completing 25 memorial reviews earns the Diligent Sovereign achievement; your first Approve/Reject earns Ready to Rule.
The Edict System
Issuing imperial edicts becomes available mid-game. Edicts let you:
- Grant titles (raises standing with the recipient's faction)
- Strip dignities (lowers standing but can break a rival's power base)
- Issue policy decrees (affects the realm's stability meter, which is hidden)
The Golden Rule of Edicts: Never issue an edict that benefits only one faction unless you're already committed to that faction's ending. Balance edicts between factions if you're on the Empress Path.
Edict timing: Save edict authority for Chapters 31 and 32, the highest-impact sessions before the succession crises. The "Open Frontier Markets" edict required for the Turkic alliance ending must be issued before the border council.
The QTE System
Quick-time events appear during dramatic moments, a hunt, a wall climb, a final showdown. Key facts:
- Most QTEs loop until you pass, but failing costs trait points each attempt.
- A few QTEs have distinct fail scenes; the mosquito QTE in the Rear Palace arc has different paths for passing on attempt 1 vs 2.
- Passing every QTE in the game (including the ones that can't be failed) unlocks Martial Arts Master.
- Passing all three QTEs in the Prologue (Seize the Hairpin, Clutch Moment, and the final chase) earns Nimble Moves and unlocks both story routes.
The Hidden Option System
Some choices only appear after waiting a few seconds:
- Phoenix Crown scene: After removing the crown, the "Refuse" option appears only after waiting.
- Li Zhi route key sequence: Confront Li Zhi → retreat to advance → WAIT 3 seconds → "I don't want to leave" appears.
- Chapter 36 "The Choice You Know Is Right": Once "Agree with him" appears, wait a moment; "I refuse to leave" appears shortly after. Selecting it is required for the Li Zhi good ending path.
- Chapter 16 (RtE I numbering): "No, I will flip the script" appears after a few seconds of waiting on the fate question.
Step-by-Step Strategy: Route Walkthroughs
Route 1: Main Story: First Run (Recommended Order)
Sequence 1: Prologue: Make-or-Break Choice
- Choose "Return to the palace and claw to the top" to enter the main story. Choose "Leave this place for another life" only when you're ready for the Side Story.
- On the main path, "Scream Li Zhi's name" and pass the QTE to reach Chapter 17: A New Era. Busting through and slipping the hairpin to the nun are Bad Endings.
- If you want the Side Story instead: "Seize the hairpin and take Liu Xi out", pass both QTEs, then handle her death scene (stash the corpse, bolt, or stage it as an assassin's work; all three continue).
Sequence 2: Chapters 17-20: The Rear Palace
- Chapter 17 "What Matters Most" is the single most important pivot of the game. Pick "I want it all" (Ambition+, Decisiveness+, Strategy+) for the balanced Empress path, "Power" for a pure ambition run, or "Li Zhi's Love" for the romance route. You will come back and change this multiple times for 100% completion; the choice only saves after you finish the chapter and see the end-of-chapter screens.
- In the Empress's Question scene, "Aunt, don't speak of Her Majesty that way" gives Strategy+ and the Exactly My Type achievement.
- At "Spend Your Stipend" (Chapter 20), choose "Distribute it among the lowly chamberlains" for Prestige+. Buying gifts to please the Empress and Consort Liu leads to a Bad Ending.
- During the Liu Xi interrogation arc, picking "Slap her" five times and going through the triple-slap each time (15 total) earns Slap Specialist.
Sequence 3: Chapters 21-24: Consort Politics
- Chapter 21 "The Poisoned Earrings": "Keep wearing them" (Fortitude+) is the safe choice. "Replace with an identical pair" (Strategy+) and "Tell Li Zhi the truth" (Decisiveness+) both end in Bad Endings.
- Chapter 23 "Fill the Verses" puzzle: place the left poem in the left slot, the middle poem in the right slot, and the right poem in the middle slot.
- In "A Bedtime Story", select all three options across replays for the Sleep Can Wait achievement.
- "Powder in the Tea": "Investigate the food first" (Fortitude+) avoids the trap; exposing it immediately ends badly.
- "Recruiting Youzi": the correct choice gives All Five Traits+.
Sequence 4: Chapters 25-28: Closer to Power
- Chapter 25 "Resignation Petition": read through the three officials, then pick Ji. Picking Ji first versus after Zhangsun/Xiao triggers different auto-splits; if you're struggling to see both, restart from the end of Chapter 24 rather than the start of 25.
- "Control of the Court": "Quietly win over officials from humble origins" (Ambition+, Fortitude+, Decisiveness+) is the progression choice; the other two options lead to mid-endings.
- Chapter 26 "The Clash of Two Tigers": "Stand aside and let the two destroy each other" (Strategy+). If you then choose "I'm busy" when Li Tai asks to see you, you get the straight-line path.
- Chapter 27 "Life-giver or Soul-taker": "Harm me, your whole clan dies" (Decisiveness+). "Push Push" QTE must be passed (Fortitude+).
- Chapter 28 "What Use Is an Assassin": "Frame the Empress for an even greater crime" (Fortitude+, Strategy+) ends the chapter correctly.
Sequence 5: Chapters 29-32: The Throne
- Chapter 29 "Verbal Duel with Chu Suiliang": "Perhaps you are the one who belongs on that throne" gives All Five Traits+ and is the progression choice.
- Chapter 30: "Certain victory" (Decisiveness+, Minister of Works +7) when asked your odds. "Aunt's Last Wish": either answer works, both grant All Five Traits+ afterward.
- Chapter 31 is the most troublesome chapter in the game. Complete it in one run following this exact sequence: "The Promotion" → "Thank you, Your Majesty"; "How to Deal With Your Brothers?" → "Keep them in place"; "Dismantling the Clans" → Approve all six nodes; "The Opportunity to Cultivate Power" → "Follow your judgment and recommend Ji Huaizhong". The choice memory doesn't take effect right away, so replaying this chapter piecemeal causes deadlocks.
- Chapter 32 "Li Zhong's Question": "Sacrifice Chancellor Zhangsun" gives All Five Traits+ and unlocks the continuation. Decide the fates of Consort Xiao, the Chancellor, Li Zhong, and the deposed Empress; each kill/spare choice shapes Chapter 36 auto-splits.
Sequence 6: Chapters 33-38: Emperor and Empress
- Chapter 33 "Whose Side Are You On": "Support the Emperor and speak up for him" (Ambition+, Decisiveness+). "Why Wage War on Baijie": "To intimidate the surrounding states" (Strategy+, Prestige+); the other two reasons are mid-endings.
- Chapter 34 "What to Do with the Slanderer": "Let bygones be bygones" (Fortitude+, Prestige+, then All Five Traits+).
- Chapter 35: for the Li Zhi good path, do not plead for Li Yifu (Fortitude+) and present your opponents' memorials (Strategy+). Li Yifu's choice and the memorial selection are pivotal.
- Chapter 36 "The Choice You Know Is Right": wait for "I refuse to leave" to appear, then select it. This is the hidden-option sequence that separates the romance ending from the power ending.
- Chapter 37: "Rumors of an Illegitimate Child" → "Quash the slander and severely punish those who malign the Crown Prince." Choosing "Seize the moment to fuel the rumor" causes Li Xian's Emotional Stirring to trigger a game over.
- Chapter 38 "The Final Confession": "Never" (Ambition+, Decisiveness+) is the power path; the positive responses continue the romance path. "Sun and Moon in Harmony" achievement unlocks after Li Zhi's Final Will.
Sequence 7: Chapters 39-41: Road to Empress
- "The Incompetent New Emperor": "Depose the emperor" (Decisiveness+); reducing him to a figurehead is a mid-ending.
- "Deposing the Emperor": choose "The Imperial Guards" (Decisiveness+); the other three targets are mid-endings.
- "The Vacant Throne": "Appoint a new emperor" (Strategy+). Ascending the throne yourself is a Bad Ending.
- "The Timid Dan": "Grant his request" (Decisiveness+). "The Royalist Commander": "A member of the Li house" (Strategy+); Wu and Xu picks are Bad Endings.
- "Path to the Throne: Grace" → option 3, "Construct halls symbolizing imperial power". "Path to the Throne: Auspice" → option 2, "Promote auspicious omens as proof of your mandate." Wrong picks trigger a mid-ending.
- "The Grand Buddha": "Yes" grants Prestige+ and unlocks the Pray feature on the main menu; "No" still allows you to become emperor. The Court feature unlocks after the coronation scene either way, and the A Golden Age achievement fires after the coronation.
Route 2: Side Story / Another Life (Li Tai Route)
The Side Story follows a parallel life where you flee the palace with Li Tai's help. It runs Chapters 17-23 and is substantially shorter than the main story.
Sequence 1: Entering the Side Story
- Prologue: "Leave this place for another life" → "Seize the hairpin and take Liu Xi out" → pass both QTEs.
- Side Chapter 17 "Prince of Wei's Promise": "Kill him" (taking you with him is a Bad Ending + Distant Echoes achievement).
- "Handle Liu Xi's Death": "Dress as Liu Xi and slip away into the night." The other two options are Bad Endings.
- "What Will You Leave Behind?" (pivotal): choose the Amulet or the Sun and Moon Hairpin. Do NOT leave the Soaring Red Kite Hairpin from Li Tai; you need it to pawn later.
- "Danger Approaches": "Pretend to be Liu Xi" (running is a Bad Ending). "Deal with Official Xia": "Force her to keep your secret."
- "Which Item to Pawn" (pivotal): pawn the Soaring Red Kite Hairpin. The Peony Hairpin is a Bad Ending; the Amulet loops back.
- "Witness Yue's Crisis" (pivotal): "Step in and save her daughter." She gives you a bottle that saves your life later and unlocks the Time to Step In achievement.
- "A Choice Within": "No way! I'm not giving up!" to enter Another Life. Taking Liu Xi's hand and falling is a Bad Ending.
Sequence 2: Side Chapters 18-20: Dangerous Reunion
- Chapter 18 "Mirage Pavilion's Offer": having pawned the Soaring Red Kite unlocks "The Relationship" dialogue with Li Tai. In it, "I wronged him" is the safe choice; claiming you carry Li Tai's baby or that he wronged you ends badly.
- "Reveal Her Identity?" (only if you saved Yue's daughter): "Keep it from her" is required for the best ending path.
- "Assassin's Blade": without the bottle from Yue's daughter, every option ends in death. With it, pass "Cast It on Her" and "Fight Back" QTEs to finish the chapter.
- Chapter 19 "What Intel to Deliver" (pivotal): "...met General Yuan Lichen" (Mirage Suspicion -1). The "split into two groups" option triggers Ending 40 later; "personally killed Xiao Nian" is an immediate Bad Ending.
- "A Deadly Choice": "Honor your promise and help Li Tai" (leaving to trade news is a Bad Ending). "Your Dagger": "Send a signal to the Prince of Wei."
- Chapter 20: pass "Scatter Dust" and "Throw the Wine Jug" QTEs. "Win Over Yuan Lichen": "Have you forgotten your comrades?" "Yuan Lichen's Concerns": "You should've said so sooner, Xu Xiaode's already taken the side of the Prince of Wei." "Time to Deliver Intel": "The Prince of Wei and Yuan Lichen have formed an alliance" (Suspicion -1).
- "Why Learn to Fight": "So I'd never need protection again" (Li Tai +2). "Li Tai's Question": "Because some people are worth everything" (Li Tai +2). "Reveal His Whereabouts": "Tell them" (keeping it secret is a Bad Ending). "Remind Prince of Wei": "Show kindness" (Li Tai +2).
Sequence 3: Side Chapters 21-23: Beyond the Chains and Another Life
- Chapter 21 "A Proposal of Marriage": "Your Highness, maybe you should just accept it" (knocking sense into him is a Bad Ending; asking Minhui loops back).
- "The Guard Approaches": "Keep working" (the crate is a Bad Ending). "Knock Them Out" QTE, passed 5 times total, earns Knockout Artist.
- "Persuade Xu Minhui" (timed): "Don't you want your family's blessing?" leads to "Minhui's Resolve" → "Let her go". The other options are Bad Endings.
- "The Letter to Xu Xiaode": "I am already married to Danlichi" ends the chapter and earns Beyond the Chains.
- Chapter 22 "To Be, Or Not To Be" (pivotal): "Take the evidence and trade it at Mirage Pavilion for the antidote" is the good path. Confessing to Li Tai, leaving the evidence, and rebelling are all Bad Endings.
- Chapter 23 "After Rebirth": "I'm finally free to chase a new life" gives the GOOD END and the Another Life achievement. "I'll help him, and wait for his return" continues to "Reason to Stay" → "Because someone here still matters to me" (Li Tai +2).
- "A Trap in the Capital": "I will go with you" is the continuation; "Your Highness, be careful" ends the story (Ending 53 or 54, depending on your Chapter 19 Gaoyang choice).
- The "Three at the Lakeside Pavilion" pivotal event: the combination "I don't / Watch in silence / The Prince of Wei / Throne" continues; "I do / Your Majesty / Remnants of Chancellor Zhangsun / He lacks the power to rebel" ends it.
- "Kiss Him" QTE, then "Yue's Questioning". The final split requires you to have kept her daughter's identity secret in Chapter 18 and to lie to Yue now.
Progression Strategy
Chapter-By-Chapter Priority
| Phase | Chapters | Goal | Key Actions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction | 17-20 | Establish baseline traits | Make choices matching your intended ending. Save before every audience. |
| Power Building | 21-28 | Choose your faction and build reputation | Pick faction-aligned choices consistently. Complete all memorials. |
| Consolidation | 29-32 | Lock in your route | Critical branch points. Use save Slot C here. Chapter 31 must be finished in one run. |
| Endgame | 33-38 | Survive the purge | Enemies will try to eliminate you. High Fortitude + Decisiveness help survive assassination attempts. |
| Resolution | 39-41 | Ending convergence | Your Chapter 37 and 41 choices determine which ending variant you get within your route. |
Resource Priority
- Time Rewinds (Coins): Save at least 2,000 Coins for the later acts. The endgame has the highest concentration of instant-fail checks. On a Bad Ending screen, the Tips button (995 gold) teleports you straight back to the pivotal choice that caused the deadlock.
- Save Slots: More valuable than any in-game currency. Use all slots across a single playthrough.
- Faction Favor: More important than any individual trait for mid-game survival. If you have no allies by the Consolidation phase, you will be exiled regardless of trait scores.
What to Unlock First (Multiple Runs)
| Priority | Unlock | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1st run | Main Story / Empress Path ending | Full narrative context and unlocks Court Mode + Envoy Audience |
| 2nd run | Li Zhi route (Sun and Moon in Harmony) | Romance + political alliance path. Requires the Chapter 36 wait option |
| 3rd run | Side Story / Another Life | Li Tai route. Requires the correct Prologue branch and pawn choices |
| 4th run | "A Golden Age" achievement | All factions at peace. Requires careful balancing, the hardest ending to achieve |
| Completion | Master of All | 100% both Main and Side Story |

Key Endings: How to Reach Them
True Empress Ending (千古女帝): Requires all five traits at sufficient levels, correct choices in all Pivotal Choices, building the Bright Hall (修建明堂), and triggering the Auspicious Sign Event (祥瑞事件). Final sequence: choose power repeatedly, construct halls of imperial power, promote auspicious omens, build the Grand Buddha, and take the throne.
Li Zhi Route Good End (Sun and Moon in Harmony): Choose "Li Zhi's Love" at the Chapter 17 pivot, wait for and pick "I refuse to leave" in Chapter 36, quash the rumor in Chapter 37, and answer Li Zhi's Final Will with "Yes".
Li Tai "Another Life" Good End: Take the Prologue side branch, pawn the Soaring Red Kite, save Yue's daughter, deliver the correct intel in Chapter 19, take the evidence for the antidote in Chapter 22, and choose "I'm finally free to chase a new life" in Chapter 23. Achievement: "Another Life."
Retirement Ending: Choose "Li Zhi's Love" at the Chapter 17 pivot, decline the promotion in Chapter 31, and take the mercy options through the final act.
Reunion Ending: Keep Li Zhi alive, visit his tomb, and choose "reveal the truth" in the final chapters.
Beyond the Chains (Side Chapter 21): Help Li Tai escape his arranged marriage by declaring to Xu Xiaode that you are already married to Danlichi.
Ganye Redemption (Side Story hidden): Return to Ganye Temple not as an exile but as its head, transforming the place of imprisonment into a center of learning.
Wardrobe Indecision (easter egg): Switch outfits ten times during the Chapter 2 (RtE I) wardrobe selection.
Advanced Tips
- The Story Map is faster than reloading. If you made a choice you regret, open the Story Map, click the node before your mistake, and replay from there. This preserves progress on subsequent nodes.
- Deadlock backtracking shortcut. Once you change a pivotal choice, you don't need to replay the whole sequence. Watch through the subsequent story for that node, exit to the Storyline screen, and jump directly back to your deadlock point. The system automatically registers the revised choice and unlocks the content ahead.
- Read Bad Ending descriptions. They often contain hidden clues pointing toward the completion route.
- Choose boldly. Most death options can be selected again immediately, so feel free to experiment.
- Dialogue options are color-coded. The UI subtly emphasizes which options are trait checks (bolded keywords) vs. flavor (regular text). Only the bolded keywords affect trait scores.
- Hidden options require patience. The most important choices ("I don't want to leave", "I refuse to leave", "flip the script") only appear after waiting 3+ seconds. If a choice seems missing, wait.
- Second playthrough skip. On NG+, you can skip all previously viewed scenes. The game automatically stops at unvisited nodes. A completionist run takes about 4-5 hours.
- Chapter 31 in one sitting. This is the only chapter where the choice-memory function doesn't take effect right away. Complete it fully before jumping to any story deadlock points.
- The DLC (4742160) adds an alternate prologue with 3 extra chapters. Play it after your first completion; it assumes you understand the faction system.
- Mobile vs. Steam differences. The iOS/Android version has a simplified trait UI and fewer branching paths. The Steam version has the full trait system and all chapters. For guides or achievement hunting, use the Steam version.
- Personality Trait Sketch exploitation. The ending sketch is determined by your highest and lowest traits. To force a specific archetype (e.g., "Deadly Arsenic Trioxide"), intentionally dump one trait below 20 while maxing two others at 80+.
- Achievement hunting: High Roller. Finish the full blossom (exploration map). The upper-right petal is doable early; the top petal is mostly odd/wrong/BE responses and typically completes after an ending that kills Liu Xi late game; the lower-left fills at 100% exploration.
- The 97% hang. If stuck at 97% exploration in the mid-game, replay both Fashion Faceoff branches fully through Wu Clan's Crisis. In later chapters, "Tell him to stay" has two possible scenes depending on your earlier "Whose Hairpin?" choice.
- Post-game loop. After the main story, use Court Mode to review memorials and manage officials, receive Envoys via "Attend Court" on the home screen, and farm flowers/eggs for Leaderboard achievements.
FAQ / Common Mistakes
Q: I reached the Consolidation phase and got exiled. What went wrong? A: You didn't build enough faction reputation. By the Power Building phase, you should have at least one faction at "Friendly" or higher. Focus your choices on one faction's values.
Q: Can I romance both Li Zhi and Li Tai? A: No. The Prologue forces the split: one branch is the main story with Li Zhi, the other is the Side Story with Li Tai. Trying to play both sides locks you into a generic ending.
Q: Is the game difficult? A: Not mechanically, but the narrative branching is complex. Roughly 76% of recent reviews are positive, and most players find it rewarding once the trait and pivot systems click. Use save files liberally.
Q: How long is one playthrough? A: First playthrough: 8-10 hours watching all footage. Subsequent playthroughs with skip: 3-4 hours.
Q: What do Coins do besides Time Rewinds? A: Coins unlock cosmetic title frames and profile badges, and can be exchanged for flowers/eggs in the Leaderboard. Save them for Time Rewinds; cosmetics don't affect gameplay.
Q: I chose the wrong trait at the start. Should I restart? A: No. The starting choice affects your baseline, but you have 24 chapters to adjust. Only restart if you're past the Consolidation phase and locked into the wrong route.
Q: What determines the Imperial Personality Trait Sketch? A: Your trait scores at the end of the game. The archetype (e.g., "Deadly Arsenic Trioxide," "Romantic Datura," "Overachiever Lurid Bolete") is a poetic summary of your highest and lowest traits. To force a specific sketch, min-max two traits and dump one.
Q: I keep dying in the endgame. What's the safe path? A: The showdown QTEs have multiple rounds; pass them all. On the Li Zhi path, shout his name and pass the QTE. If you keep failing QTEs, remember most loop until you pass, but each fail costs trait points, which can lock you out of the ending you want.
Q: Which is the "true" ending of Road to Empress II? A: "Sun and Moon in Harmony" is the true ending for the Li Zhi path, with Wu Yuanzhao and Li Zhi achieving genuine shared rule. The Empress ending (千古女帝) is the other major "true" path for the power route. Both require careful trait management and the correct final sequences.
Q: Does my Road to Empress I save carry over? A: The game starts fresh with a recap of the first game's events. Your Chapter 17 choices in RtE II establish your baseline; the first game's save does not directly import, but knowledge of the characters (Li Zhi, Li Tai, Empress Wang) pays off.
Q: I'm stuck at a deadlock and the game says my past choices ripple forward. A: Find the matching Pivot Choice (the game prompts you when it happens; bookmark these). Change it, replay the affected node, then use the Storyline jump to return to your deadlock point. Alternatively, spend 995 gold on the Tips button at the Bad Ending screen to teleport directly to the responsible choice.
Q: What does Court Mode do? A: Unlocked after completing the main story, Court Mode lets you review memorials, promote or demote officials, and manage the court. It feeds several achievements (The Throne Has Spoken, Imperial Grade, Imperial Fury, Ready to Rule, Diligent Sovereign) and pairs with the Envoy Audience post-game content.
