Overview
Renz Tower Defense is a fast-paced minimalist tower defense game by indie developer Logan Renz (Renz Studios). Launched into Steam Early Access on July 4, 2026 (full release July 13), it strips away complexity and focuses on core TD fundamentals: build your defense, scale your economy, survive the waves.
Built with Python and Pygame, the game features multiple tower types with branching upgrade paths, an interest-based gold economy, and escalating enemy waves in a clean minimalist visual style. It runs on Windows 10+, macOS 11+, and Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+/Steam OS). Currently in Early Access — the developer's roadmap includes more maps, towers, enemies, boss encounters, endless mode, achievements, and additional game modes.
If you've played Bloons TD 6, GemCraft, or classic Flash-era tower defense, Renz TD offers a refreshing minimalist take with satisfying combat feedback and genuinely deep economy mechanics.

Getting Started
3.1 Start on Green Plains
Green Plains is the tutorial map — simple S-curve path, 18 build zones, 25 waves, forgiving early enemies. Do not jump into Desert Pass or Frozen Ridge first; those maps assume tower synergy and economy knowledge.
3.2 Opening Build (Waves 1–5)
- Wave 1 (200 gold): Place two Arrow Towers at the first path bend where enemies slow on the turn. 100 gold remaining.
- Waves 2–3: Save gold. The interest system (10% of reserves, max +30/wave) rewards saving. Do not build.
- Wave 4: Add a Cannon Tower at the second bend (~100g). First armored enemies appear around wave 5-6.
- Wave 5: Upgrade one Arrow to Level 2 (75g). Then build Income Generator #1 (200g) if you have a buffer above 150g.
Golden rule: Never drop below 50 gold unless emergency. A Level 2 tower + reserves beats a Level 3 tower + zero gold — the interest system punishes overspending.
3.3 Mid-Game (Waves 6–15)
- Wave 8: Build an Archer Tower (75g) on high ground. First flying enemies appear — even one leak can fail a Hard/Nightmare run.
- Wave 10: Place a Mage Tower near the entrance. The slow effect compounds with your damage towers.
- Wave 12: Income Generator #2 should be running by now. Push key towers to Level 2-3.
3.4 Late Game (Waves 16+)
- All 4 Income Generators by wave 20
- Core towers at Level 3-4 with at least one specialization path (Path A or B)
- Save special abilities for boss waves
- Check the enemy composition panel between every wave
4. Tower Guide — Complete Reference
4.1 Arrow Tower
Cost: 50g | Role: Backbone DPS | Best vs: Light infantry, sustained single-target
| Level | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50 | Single arrow, moderate fire rate |
| 2 | 75 | +50% fire rate, +50% damage |
| 3 | 120 | Triple shot — 3 independent arrows |
| 4 | 200 | Rapid fire + enemies explode on death (AoE splash) |
Paths: Viper — poison DoT that stacks and ignores armor; best for bosses and high-HP enemies. Sniper — max range + 3× crit chance; best on high ground covering long sightlines. Place near path bends. Viper early in the path (poison ticks accumulate); Sniper on elevated tiles with maximum visibility.
4.2 Cannon Tower
Cost: 100g | Role: AoE / Armor Shred | Best vs: Armored enemies, dense groups
| Level | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | Single cannonball, small splash radius |
| 2 | 80 | +25% splash radius |
| 3 | 150 | 50% armor penetration |
| 4 | 250 | Cluster bomb: 3 submunitions spread on impact |
Paths: Demolisher — max single-target damage + full armor penetration; the boss-killer. Scatter — max splash radius + knockback; pushes enemies backward, effectively increasing path length. Place at the center of long straightaways where enemies bunch up. On Desert Pass, the merge point is the premium Cannon slot.
4.3 Mage Tower
Cost: 150g | Role: Crowd Control | Best vs: Fast enemies, flying, swarm waves
| Level | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 150 | Magic bolt, 25% slow for 2s |
| 2 | 100 | +50% slow duration, +30% damage |
| 3 | 180 | Chain lightning — jumps to 2 additional targets |
| 4 | 300 | Lightning storm — persistent AoE that damages and slows |
Paths: Frost — max slow (60%) + 1.5s freeze proc; essential on Frozen Ridge. Storm — chain to 5 targets with ramping damage; devastates dense waves and flying swarms. Always place Mages near the entrance — slowing enemies through the entire kill zone is their primary value.
4.4 Archer Tower
Cost: 75g | Role: Anti-Air Specialist | Best vs: All flying enemies
| Level | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 75 | Auto-prioritizes flying enemies |
| 2 | 60 | +40% range vs flying |
| 3 | 120 | Dual arrows — two simultaneous projectiles |
| 4 | 200 | Barrage: 6-arrow rapid-fire volley |
Paths: Hawkeye — extreme range (+80%) with guaranteed flying priority; one well-placed Hawkeye covers half the map. Barrage — rapid fire with air-splash explosions; best against dense flying swarms. Place on central high ground. One Archer is usually enough — they're dead weight on ground-only waves.
4.5 Income Generator
Cost: 200g | Effect: +15 gold per wave | Max: 4
Build timing: #1 by wave 7, #2 by wave 12, #3 by wave 18, #4 when comfortable (wave 20+). At 200g upfront, a Generator pays itself back in ~10-11 waves (faster when factoring interest on saved gold). Never build more than 4 — the fifth would never pay back before match end.
5. Economy Guide
5.1 Income Sources
| Source | Formula | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Base Wave Income | 50 + (wave# × 5) gold | Scales steadily; late waves are very lucrative |
| Interest | 10% of gold reserves (max +30) | Paid at the start of each wave — spend AFTER collecting |
| Income Generators | +15 per Generator per wave | Max 4 = +60/wave |
5.2 Interest Snowball
At 300 gold reserves, you hit the interest cap (+30/wave). This is effectively a free Generator's worth of gold every other wave. Strategy:
- Early (waves 1-8): Keep 100-150g minimum. Spend only above threshold.
- Mid (waves 9-18): Keep 200-300g. Spend excess on upgrades.
- Late (waves 19+): Stay at 300g. Per-wave income = 30 (interest) + 50-170 (base) + 60 (Generators) = 140-260g — funds rapid tower specialization.
5.3 Sell-to-Rebuild
Towers sell for 75% of total investment (build + all upgrades). Sell weak early towers after wave 15 to fund Level 4 upgrades on core towers. Never sell an Income Generator (lost future income > one-time cash). Never sell your only anti-air tower before waves that might have fliers.
5.4 Economy Benchmarks
| Wave | Gold After Spending | Key Towers | Generators |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 100-150 | 2× Arrow L2, 1× Cannon L1 | 0 |
| 10 | 200-250 | + Archer L1, + Mage L1, Cannon L2 | 1 |
| 15 | 250-300 | Towers at L2-3, 1× specialized | 2 |
| 20 | 300 | Core towers L3-4, 2-3× specialized | 3 |
| 25+ | 300 | Full L4 + specializations | 4 |
6. Enemy Types & Countering
| Type | Traits | Counter | First Wave | Threat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light Infantry | Fast, low HP, groups | Arrow splash, Cannon AoE | 1 | Low (but swarms overwhelm single-target) |
| Armored | Slow, high HP, damage reduction | Cannon armor-pierce, Mage (magic bypasses armor) | 5-6 | Medium |
| Fast Runners | Very fast, moderate HP | Mage slow + towers at bends | 8-10 | High (can leak through gaps) |
| Flying | Ignores path, moderate HP | Archer (specialized), upgraded Arrow | 8 | Critical (one leak = run loss on Hard+) |
| Boss | Massive HP, abilities | Focus fire + Tower Boost + Demolisher Cannons | 10-15 | Extreme |
| Swarmers | Tiny, fast, minimal HP | Cannon splash, Storm Mage AoE | 12+ | High (sneak past slow towers) |
Enemy composition panel (between waves) is your most valuable tool — it previews incoming types. Red = armored/boss, blue = flying, multiple icons = swarm.
Boss strategy: Save gold the wave before. Pop Tower Boost (2× damage, 12s) when boss enters kill zone. Slow Field if boss pushes through. Demolisher Cannons are mandatory for boss waves.
Advanced Tips
7.1 Green Plains (Easy — 25 Waves, 18 Build Zones)
S-curve path with generous build space.
Build order: 2× Arrow at bend 1 → Cannon at bend 2 (wave 4) → Generator #1 (wave 5-6) → Archer on center high ground (wave 8) → Frost Mage at entrance (wave 10) → Generator #2 (wave 12) → Cannon to L3 (wave 14) → Generator #3 (wave 18) → Cannon L4 Demolisher (wave 20) → fill remaining zones by wave 25.
Final layout: 2× Arrow (1 Viper, 1 Sniper), 2× Cannon (1 Demolisher, 1 Scatter), 1× Frost Mage, 1× Hawkeye Archer, 4× Generator.
7.2 Desert Pass (Medium — 30 Waves, 22 Build Zones)
Two lanes merging into one exit. Defend both fronts.
Key principles:
- Split defense: Minimum 1 Arrow + 1 Cannon per lane. Don't favor one side.
- Merge point is premium: Your strongest tower (Demolisher Cannon L3+) goes on the tile where lanes converge — it hits everything.
- Archer goes center: High ground between lanes, not in one lane. Must cover both air approaches.
- Mage at each entrance: Two Frost Mages slow enemies through both gauntlets.
- Wave 8 alert: Desert Pass throws fliers earlier and in larger groups. Archer must be L2 by wave 8.
Final layout: 4× Arrow (2 per lane), 3× Cannon (1 per lane + 1 merge), 2× Frost Mage (1 per entrance), 1× Hawkeye Archer (center), 4× Generator.
7.3 Frozen Ridge (Hard — 35 Waves, 16 Build Zones)
Winding elevated path. High ground = +20% range. Enemies faster on ice. Boss every 5 waves from wave 10.
Key principles:
- High ground mandatory: 16 zones total — every placement must use elevation. Never build on low ground if high ground exists.
- Frost is king: Enemies move faster here. Frost-spec Mages (60% slow + freeze) are non-negotiable. Place one at earliest possible high ground.
- Conservative upgrades: Only 16 slots. Choose 4-5 "hero" towers and max them. Rest are L1-2 support.
- Boss every 5 waves: Be ready by wave 9. Demolisher Cannons + Tower Boost. Interest cap (300g) by wave 12 and stay there.
Final layout: 2× Sniper Arrow (high ground), 2× Demolisher Cannon (high ground near exit), 2× Frost Mage (entrance + mid), 1× Hawkeye Archer (highest ground), 3-4× Generator.
8. Special Abilities
| Ability | Unlock | Effect | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Strike | Wave 10 | Heavy damage in 3×3 area | Dense armored clusters; clearing swarms near exit |
| Slow Field | Wave 15 | 50% slow in area, 8s | Emergency leak prevention; grouping for Cannon splash |
| Gold Rush | Wave 20 | Instant +100 gold | Emergency funding before boss; mid-wave critical upgrade |
| Tower Boost | Wave 25 | 2× ALL tower damage, 12s | Boss waves; wave 30+ density spikes |
Combos: Slow Field + Air Strike (group then bomb). Tower Boost + Demolisher Cannon focus fire on boss. Gold Rush → instant upgrade when waves go badly.
9. Advanced Techniques & Common Mistakes
9.1 Techniques
- Lane stacking (Slow → Kill): Frost Mages at entrance, pure damage (Demolisher, Sniper) at exit. Enemies are slowed through the gauntlet, then obliterated at the end. Far more efficient than spreading damage towers throughout.
- Interest timing: Interest calculates at wave START. Spend AFTER the +interest popup. Build Generators right after a wave ends to preserve reserves for the interest calc before next wave.
- Sell timing: 75% refund only between waves. Plan sells during the planning phase.
- Overkill avoidance: If enemies die in the first 20% of the path, towers there are over-leveled. Redirect gold to towers further back, or sell and reposition.
- Pause to plan: Press Esc between waves to assess layout, check composition panel, and plan spending.
9.2 Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Impact | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Too many towers early | Starves interest income | 2-3 towers handle waves 1-8. Save gold. |
| Over-upgrading one tower | L4 Arrow at wave 8 costs 445g; could buy 4 L1 towers or 2 Generators | Spread upgrades until mid-game |
| No anti-air by wave 8 | One flying leak fails Hard/Nightmare | Archer on high ground by wave 8 |
| Never selling | Weak early towers occupy prime real estate | Sell L1 towers after wave 15 |
| Generators too late | Each wave without one is -15g | #1 by wave 7, #2 by wave 12 |
| Random placement | Cannons on bends waste splash; Archers on low ground waste range | Match tower to terrain (see §4) |
9.3 Difficulty Settings
| Difficulty | Waves | Enemy HP | Speed | Start Gold | Lives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 25-35 | 100% | 100% | 200 | 20 |
| Hard | 25-35 | 150% | 120% | 175 | 10 |
| Nightmare | 30-40 | 200% | 140% | 150 | 5 |
Hard unlocks after Normal; Nightmare after Hard. Nightmare requires near-perfect economy management.
