Overview
Leyla In Veil is an HD-2D pixel-style side-scrolling action shooter survival horror from solo developer cloud_li, coming soon to Steam. You play Laila, a senior agent from a mysterious organization, partnered with her companion Flora. Your mission: investigate the Istvi Art Gallery, a remote museum where everyone inside vanished overnight. Two hours into the police investigation, the captain dragged two corpses out the back door, and the survivors suffered mental breakdowns.
The game is a deliberate hybrid: side-scrolling shooter combat, survival horror resource management, and RPG progression. You shoot, parry, and melee your way through grotesque monsters, upgrade weapons with hidden effects, manage backpack weight, and solve simple environmental puzzles between firefights. A free demo has been in active development through 2026, with updates adding Survival Game mode, accessories, item transmutation, and clothing systems.

Who it's for: fans of Blasphemous-style side-scrolling combat, survival horror resource tension, and HD-2D pixel art. If you liked the atmosphere of Signalis but wanted faster, more action-forward combat, this sits right in that gap.
How to Play
The Core Loop
- Investigate. Move through the gallery following the story, scavenging ammo, medicine, and crafting materials.
- Fight. Combat is action shooting: firearms for range, melee and parries for close quarters. Different monsters have distinct attack patterns and defenses.
- Manage. Backpack capacity is weight-based. Every item takes space, so you are constantly deciding what to carry.
- Upgrade. Spend resources at Flora to upgrade weapons. Fully upgraded weapons unlock hidden effects.
- Survive. When swarmed, carve a path and keep moving. The gallery does not forgive hesitation.
Controls
Controls are customizable via key binding (added in a demo update). Full controller support is confirmed. Core actions: shoot, melee, parry, dodge, interact, aim, reload, and quick-swap weapons from shortcuts. Weapons auto-add to shortcuts on pickup in the latest demo build.
The First 30 Minutes
The demo opens with Chapter 1, overhauled in the Delta update. Expect:
- A tutorial that teaches shooting, melee, and parry timing.
- Early scavenging: ammo, herbs, and crafting materials.
- Your first encounters with basic zombies and the red-eyed elite Blader.
- An introduction to Flora, your companion and upgrade vendor.
Take time with the parry timing in the early fights. It carries the whole game.
Advanced Tips
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | What to Do Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Holding the trigger down | Ammo is scarce. Spraying wastes it and leaves you empty for the next room. | Shoot in controlled bursts. Aim for heads and weak points. |
| Ignoring parry | Melee enemies close distance fast. Shooting alone burns ammo. | Parry to open enemies, then follow with melee or a point-blank shot. |
| Carrying everything | Weight-based backpack fills fast. You end up dropping good items or walking slow. | Prioritize ammo, medicine, and crafting materials. Discard duplicates early. |
| Never upgrading | Weapons plateau quickly. Fully upgraded weapons unlock hidden effects. | Spend resources at Flora early. A maxed weapon outperforms a new find nine times out of ten. |
| Rushing into swarms | Hordes overwhelm you. The game is designed to punish greed. | Pull enemies into doorways and corridors. Fight one or two at a time. |
| Ignoring traps and throwables | The environment and inventory give you tools: traps, Starlight Crystals, auto turrets. | Use them. A Starlight Crystal reduces enemy defense; an Auto Turret fights for you. |
| Skipping the map | Complex routes are easy to get lost in, and lost means dead. | Consult the map for complex routes. Exploration is rewarded but must be deliberate. |
Weapon Priority
The demo has shown a solid arsenal in development:
- BM92 — final upgrade adds a Red Dot Sight.
- VP68 — final upgrade adds Burst Fire Mode.
- APM — final upgrade reduces energy consumption.
- Tommy Gun — fastest fire rate and largest magazine; received a damage buff.
- Knife — melee weapon; repair cost reduced, and Refined Steel enhances repairs.
Fully upgrading a weapon unlocks its special upgrade. Pick a main and a backup, and max them both before branching out.
Survival Game Mode
The Delta demo added an extra game mode: Survival Game. Wave-based combat where enemies spawn in increasing numbers. The demo fixed several wave-scaling bugs (enemy HP and spawn rates after Waves 15 and 25), so the mode is now stable. It is the best place to practice parry timing and weapon rotation without the resource pressure of the story mode.
Core Mechanics
1. Action Shooting
The core combat is side-scrolling shooting. You control Laila as she moves through the gallery, aiming and firing at monsters. Weapons have distinct handling: pistols, submachine guns, and more. Reloading, aiming, and quick-swapping are all part of the combat rhythm.
2. Melee and Parry
Guns are not the only answer. Melee techniques and parries let you fight up close, and parrying opens enemies for follow-ups. The demo update made melee attacks prioritize enemies over scene objects, so you can reliably parry in a crowd. Executions and melee finishers also exist, and launching an enemy damages others it contacts.
3. Weapon Upgrades and Hidden Effects
Use in-game resources to upgrade weapons. Each weapon has unique upgrade traits, and fully upgrading one unlocks its hidden effect (Red Dot Sight on the BM92, Burst Fire on the VP68, reduced energy consumption on the APM). The upgrade path is a core progression driver.
4. Weight-Based Backpack
Backpack capacity is measured by weight, not grid slots. Different items weigh different amounts, and the weight calculation applies per item. You must strategically acquire and discard resources. Crafted items stack in large quantities, but raw materials still compete for space.
5. Flora and Item Transmutation
Flora is your companion and vendor. She offers item transmutation: exchange specimens or other items for goods, including sold weapons, accessories, and Dimensional Backpacks. She also handles weapon upgrades and permanent upgrades during a run.
6. Accessories
An item category added in the demo: up to three accessories equipped at a time. They do not affect weapons but provide beneficial effects directly to the character. Think passive build slots.
7. Traps and Tools
The environment and inventory give you options:
- Eerie Painting — a trap that can be used against enemies.
- Starlight Crystal — throwable that reduces enemy defense.
- Auto Turret, Spirit Tower, Stasis Field Emitter — automatic enemy-targeting traps.
8. Clothing System
The demo added outfits for Laila (three so far). In the full version, changing outfits will alter Laila's melee action animations. Cosmetic now, mechanical later.
Progression and Economy
- Linear story progression. The full release uses a linear progression system with save/load mechanics. The roguelike elements from the earliest demo were removed in the Gamma update, though the developer plans a separate play mode with a more roguelike combat feel.
- Weapon affixes. Firearms have different upgrade affixes corresponding to each weapon's focus. Permanent upgrades are applied during a run at Flora's location.
- Branching stages. Each stage ends with branching paths that are randomly generated, so different routes lead to the final destination. An additional stage was added to the overall flow.
- Specimens as currency. Collect specimens from enemies and exchange them at Flora for goods.
Story and Setting
The Istvi Art Gallery was built two years ago by an entrepreneur to commemorate his late artist wife. Half a month before the game begins, a supernatural incident caused multiple mysterious disappearances. Everyone inside vanished overnight. The police sealed the gallery and sent in an investigation team; two hours later, the captain dragged two corpses out the back door. The survivors suffered mental breakdowns and could not recall what they saw.
Laila and Flora, agents from a mysterious organization, are dispatched to investigate. The gallery is filled with anomalies and distortions, and the paintings themselves seem to watch. Uncovering what happened inside and the conspiracy behind it is the heart of the story.
